Perbac OPD update

News | 5 August 2015

Holchem’s Perbac OPD has now been used, extensively, for open plant disinfection for nearly three years. In that time its efficacy against spores has proven successful and aided the control of organisms such as Clostridium estertheticum in red meat.

We have seen a rise in its use for the control of Listeria on surfaces. As part of a correctly specified cleaning regime Perbac OPD has been shown to give exceptional results; a large number of food businesses are seeing their lowest, consistent levels of environmentalListeria compared with any other period of time or regime.

Perbac OPD
Perbac OPD is based on peracetic acid. It is applied as a light foam or as a spray. Work has shown that application in the method intended ensures that there is little or no smell and the exposure to hazardous components is significantly below (10 times) the work exposure limits.

Perbac OPD is supplied as an equilibrium blend of Peracetic Acid, Acetic Acid and Hydrogen Peroxide giving a 2% active concentration of Peracetic Acid (PAA).  Perbac OPD meets the requirements of current European Legislation and is supported in the Biocidal Products Directive (98/8/EC).

When used as directed, Perbac OPD is suitable for use as a disinfectant in Food, Dairy, Brewing and Beverage Production Plants.  It is also suitable for use in other high care industries where good disinfection is critical.

Peracetic acid solutions breakdown naturally once applied to harmless substances; namely: water, oxygen and very dilute acetic acid (vinegar).

Use Instructions
Perbac OPD can be used as an antibacterial disinfectant, typically at 1% – 2%v/v (200 – 400 ppm active PAA).  This may be as the final disinfection stage of manual open plant cleaning, or as automatic disinfection in aseptic fillers.  In open plant applications it is essential to ensure that operatives have suitable protective clothing (refer to MSDS) and that areas are adequately ventilated.  Also, it is advisable to use Perbac OPD through an appropriate dosing system.  Your Holchem representative will be able to advise on the most appropriate equipment.

For antifungal applications, concentrations up to 5% (1000ppm) may be required.  Your Holchem representative will be able to advise on the most appropriate disinfectant regime.

Perbac OPD is not suitable for direct food contact and is not suitable for disinfection of food stuffs.

The following are typical example applications, users should refer to Cleaning Instruction Cards for specific guidance. Other applications should be discussed with your Holchem Consultant. Note: it is advisable to validate cleaning and disinfection by an appropriate post disinfection swabbing regime.

Surface Disinfection. Perbac OPD is used as a surface anti bacterial disinfectant following thorough cleaning.

It should be applied at 1.0% v/v, as a spray or mist through a pump-up backpack, a PD400 sprayer with suitable fan jet, or a venturi applicator.  Perbac OPD applied as a thin film to surfaces will create a light foam will form as an indicator that surfaces have been covered, but this will disperse after a few minutes.
If Perbac OPD is applied through a Jet Stream or similar foaming unit, a more dense foam will form, but again this will disperse after a few minutes.

Perbac OPD should be allowed a contact time of at least 15 minutes. It is non-tainting and not classified as toxic according to “Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations”.  Where there is potential for pooling on food contact surfaces consideration should be given to rinsing.

Filler Disinfection. Perbac OPD is suitable for use as a disinfectant in automated filler / cleaner systems.  Typical concentrations will be between 0.5 and 1% (100 – 200ppm PAA).

Biocidal efficacy
Perbac OPD demonstrated antimicrobial efficacy against bacteria, yeast, fungi and spores when tested in accordance with the following methods.  Full details of test results are available on request.

Perbac OPD has been independently tested by Campden BRI and passes:

  • EN1276 @10°C, under clean and dirty conditions, at 1%v/v.
  • EN1650 @ 20°C, under clean and dirty conditions, at 1.5%v/v; but for fungicidal action against Aspergillus niger higher concentration and long contact time may be needed.
  • EN13704 @20°C, under clean conditions, at 1%v/v against Clostridium estertheticum and Bacillus subtilis.
  • Triangle Contact Taint test at 2% (BS5929 Part 3:1984).

Lab-Test Laboratorium SC and passes:

  • EN 13697 (Surface test)  @10°C,  under clean and dirty conditions, at 1%v/v.

On the basis of these results, together with an extended field trial monitored by Campden BRI, Perbac OPD is listed by Marks and Spencer as an approved terminal disinfectant for use at 1%v/v.

Sustainability
Perbac OPD is not expected to Bio accumulate. It is not derived from coco or palm oil derivatives.
