Sydney Weekes

Sydney Douglas Weekes, Syd to us, sadly passed away on 7th July 2021 with his family beside him.

Syd married Viv and they have two children Colin and Jenifer. Syd was working at Cobden Chemicals, Ramsbottom when Steve and Anne Bell decided to start a new venture, Holchem. Steve and two other partners bought Cobden and Syd became the first employee for Holchem in the role of Production Manager. The role expanded as Holchem grew and moved into the new production facility at Haslingden. Syd always made sure that the customer came first, and this attitude fostered by Steve and Anne made Holchem what it is today. In 2007 Syd and Viv decided to follow their dream and start a bar in Tenerife. The bar called Blue Terrace, after his beloved Man City, Tenerife and dog Lucky was their life for 13 years. Sadly, Syd developed cancer and despite treatment became very ill. Syd and Viv moved back to the UK, and they spent his last months near family in Clacton-on-Sea.

Work colleagues from Holchem joined family and friends at Syd’s funeral in Clacton-on-Sea. Viv, their son Colin and daughter Jenifer were amazingly strong at the funeral with Colin giving a moving, loving and amusing account of Syd’s life. Syd was a long-term Manchester City fan and attended most home and away games. He was also an avid supporter of the England team travelling abroad when the opportunity arose.

We will all have different and fond memories of Syd, but I think all will agree that he was a gentle giant of a man, sometimes grumpy but always supportive. He will be sorely missed, and our thoughts and best wishes go out to Viv and family at this time.
