In our series of ‘Team Talk’ we’re with Roy Woodall, Holchem Production Manager. Roy has been in his current role for five years and has a wealth of experience working not only for Holchem but across the food industry.
What’s your background, prior to working at Holchem?
“I have always had an interest in and worked in the food industry or companies related to it. After leaving high school in 1979 I joined J H Dewhurst as an apprentice butcher serving my time to qualify as a Master Butcher. Eventually I opened my own butcher’s shop in Middleton town centre. In 2000 I decided to take a change in direction and joined Holchem.”
Roy, what are the different roles you’ve worked in at Holchem?
“When I started work here I was a production operative which included labelling kegs and also encompassed general housekeeping. I then moved onto what we call ‘dropping’, this means filling 1000ltr tanks, 200ltr drums and 25ltr kegs. Then I went into blending which is technical role that produces specific recipes, combining various raw materials in a given order to a specific recipe.
“During this time, I was made chargehand, then supervisor and finally on to Production Manager. I’ve worked for Holchem for 19 years and one of the highlights of my career was being asked to help design the new production plant in our current site at Pilsworth.”
What are your responsibilities?
“My responsibilities include the day-to-day running of production and planning and ensuring that the team compile the orders and that they are ready on time. I also make sure all HSE requirements are met as we are an upper tier COMAH site (Control of Major Accident Hazards).”
What is the favourite part of your role?
“The day to day running of the job and seeing the company grow year on year. Production has grown consistently and it’s a very busy department. There are always different challenges to be met and the team more than meets the mark every time.”
Roy, how do you spend your free time?
“I used to coach football with a team called Roach Dynamos u17s and we won the treble in our last season before they all went onto play at open age level. I have also been a Manchester City fan for over 50 years. I love holidays in the sun and my favourite place in Europe is Portugal. We also went to Mexico for my 50th and that was fantastic. Most of my spare time is now taken up by my grandchildren Mylo, Archie, and Poppy.”
